Description
KIRMAN carpet (Iran)
Mid-20th century.
Wool pile on a cotton backing.
A very wide border in sky blue, old rose, antique gold, cream and ivory, undivided into compartments, featuring arabesques and scrolls, consists of multicoloured bouquets and floral stems in a spiralling pattern. It is set against a ruby-red field, where an imposing, oblong, multi-lobed ivory medallion takes centre stage, adorned with an intricate bluish vegetal trellis supporting delicate flowering corollas. Two small angular panels bear the signature. A fine decorative motif known as the ‘holy book cover’ design.
