Antique and original MAHAL carpet
Persian. Late 19th century
High-quality wool pile on a cotton backing.
This wide border comprises a main brick-red border featuring a succession of sky-blue and ivory flower heads, interspersed with leaves in the same shades, and two sky-blue counter-borders with garlands of undulating florets. It frames an oblong ivory field with petal motifs, featuring a central midnight-blue, multi-lobed medallion, inlaid with an interlacing pattern of pastel-coloured branches and their chestnut-coloured counterparts. Four navy-blue spandrels adorned with plant motifs embellish the whole. A beautiful, refined visual balance.
