Description
An important and magnificent TABRIZ carpet
Persia. Late 19th century
Wool pile on a cotton backing.
A navy blue field featuring a ‘thousand flowers’ motif and weeping willows forms the backdrop to a cherry-coloured counter-field – oblong and multi-lobed – sown with small flowers and divided by ivory ribbons, some angular in shape, others in arabesque patterns, amongst which deer frolic. In the centre sits a marine-coloured, multi-lobed medallion with a floral design and an ivory, sky-blue and brick-coloured centre featuring a cruciform rosette. Two old-gold counter-borders with garlands of small flowers frame the main marine border, featuring a succession of multicoloured corollas set upon ivory foliage. A very beautiful colour palette.
