Estimate €2,800 - €3,500
Description
SOUMAK carpet Caucasus-Shirvan. Late 19th century. Wool pile on a wool backing. A brick-red field, outlined with trophies and filled with a scattering of small flowers, diamonds and insect-like motifs, features three large, crenellated, crocheted, lozenge-shaped medallions in marine blue, adorned with crosses and plant motifs. The brick-red octagonal centres feature polychrome star-shaped flowers. The design is enriched by eight crocheted navy blue octagons of the same style, as well as multicoloured stylised pyramidal shapes (Caucasian Kindjals). Two marine counter-borders, featuring a series of brick-coloured star-shaped flowers, frame the main anthracite border, which features polychrome Kotchaks set against a marine and brick-coloured serrated line. The outer braid is known as the ‘running dogs’ motif’. A fine Caucasian ensemble. H_237 cm L_340 cm - Expert: Frank KASSAPIAN
