Description
Magnificent KARATCHOFF carpet
Caucasus–Armenia. Late 19th century
Wool pile on a wool backing.
Two brick-red ‘reserves’, at either end of the central field, feature medallions, some with cane motifs, star-shaped, serrated and ‘ram’s horn’ patterns, as well as various other geometric shapes. The central medallion, set against a ‘dotted’ purple field, is an ivory-coloured octagon with a green centre and features two brick-red panels, complemented by ‘cane’ motifs and various geometric symbols. Two serrated outer borders frame the main ivory field, embellished with small cruciform medallions and multicoloured triangles.
