Description
SEIKHOUR carpet (Caucasus)
Late 19th century
Wool pile on a wool backing.
A wide inner border in royal blue, featuring a succession of ‘butterflies’ in warm colours, frames a brick-red field dotted with small plants and ‘S’ motifs, supporting three magnificent depictions of stylised eagles. The wings, in ivory, brick-red and emerald green, are spread wide, with flight feathers billowing in the wind and open talons, supporting a geometric body in brick-red and royal blue, adorned with plant motifs. An outer ivory border, featuring a series of multicoloured calyxes and oak leaves, encircles the whole. Accented in brick red with broken ribbons and garlands of botehs. A sublime example of a Caucasian Seïkhour carpet, combining the decorative styles of the Tchalabert and Djiwa traditions.
