Description
Antique, fine QUASHGAI carpet
Persia. Late 19th century.
High-quality, silky wool pile on a wool foundation.
Beautiful polychromy. Slight, natural oxidation, evidence of age.
A midnight-blue, oblong and serrated field features a polychrome Herati pattern comprising an intricate, stylised vegetal entanglement, supporting an ivory lozenge-shaped medallion with corollas of blooming flowers in ruby, sky blue, chestnut and ivory, and its pendants featuring cruciform flowers. Four ivory spandrels adorned with plant motifs embellish the whole. Multiple borders in sky blue, chestnut, anthracite and ivory, studded with botehs, small flowers and St Andrew’s crosses. Two-tone highlights. An extraordinary colour palette and rare design.
