Description
LENKORAN carpet
Caucasus. Late 19th century.
Wool pile on a wool backing.
A navy blue field features four and a half medallions, composed of entomological motifs. These consist of a slender, arrow-shaped body adorned with plant motifs, framed by the stylised depiction of two opposing ivory-coloured dragons. Wide corollas separate them. Various medallions, small flowers, diamonds and other small multicoloured symbols complete the design. The frame consists of a wide ivory border featuring a succession of ‘double S’ motifs, flanked by an inner brick-red counter-border with multicoloured floral stems and foliage. Very attractive design and impressive presence.
