Description
TCHALABERT (Djeraberd) KAZAK carpet, known as ‘of the Eagles’ (Adler)
Caucasus–Armenia. Late 19th century
Wool pile on a wool backing.
A brick-red field adorned with small florets features two imposing stylised depictions of the ‘Caucasian eagle’, with radiant ivory flight feathers, a cruciform body adorned with multicoloured plant motifs, and star-shaped legs and talons. The main ivory border, featuring a series of interconnected polychrome Median stars, is flanked by tricoloured serrated edging and bicoloured ribbons.
This rug, typical of the symbolism of the Armenians of the Caucasus, features beautiful design elements.
