Central Asia. Late 19th century.
Wool velour on a cotton backing.
A dusky pink field serves as the backdrop for a scattering of flowers and blossoms arranged in a staggered pattern, interspersed with stylised plant stems, reminiscent of medieval paving. The border consists of six bands alternating between garlands of flowers and ‘S’ motifs crocheted onto an ivory and navy background. The seventh and outermost band, on a brick-red background, features small Botehs. These may be interpreted as the seven steps leading to paradise.
