Description
Important Savonnerie-style tapestry
from South-East Asia. Circa 1960–1965.
Wool velour on a cotton backing.
The centrepiece of this carpet is a multicoloured bird perched on a flowering branch, forming the central medallion against an ivory background. This medallion is set in the centre of a field in various shades of blue, dotted with delicate flowers. Four spandrels featuring floral scrolls frame the design. The main border, on a blue ground, features a garland of polychrome flowers and leaves, embellished with ideograms. Three ivory counter-borders complete the design, one of which is crenellated.
