Description
BAO-TAO carpet
China. Early 20th century.
Wool pile on a cotton backing.
On a sandbank by a tree-lined river, an elegant pair of deer come to quench their thirst, under the curious gaze of a crane perched on a rocky outcrop, in the shade of a maple tree. Exquisite design and Chinese symbolism (crane – eternal life; deer – longevity).
