A lidded soup tureen and its vermeil stand, a gift from the City of Besançon in 1810 to Jean de Bry, Prefect of the Doubs, to mark the birth of his daughter; the soup tureen sits on a round pedestal decorated with pearl mouldings and gadroons, a frieze of engraved ivy leaves, two partially fluted handles chiselled with acanthus leaves, the plain lid with a rounded rim edged with a cord moulding, and a pine-cone handle; the plain stand is decorated with pearl and cord mouldings Strasbourg, 1798–1909 Beneath the soup tureen stand: an engraved inscription reading ‘the town of Besançon, presented by Mr A.L. Daclin, its Mayor, to Mademoiselle Féréol J.L.E. de Bry, born on 9 November 1810’ Weight: 1.080 kg Diameter: 22.8 cm for the stand. Length including handles: 20.1 cm. Height: 17 cm Hallmarks: the ‘Premier Coq’ (1798–1809) and the crab In its custom-made fawn-coloured leather case, gilded with small ironwork Provenance: - Mes Couturier & De Nicolay auction, Drouot, 16 December 1987, lot 194 - Private collection, Besançon, ever since This superb bouillon was a gift from the City of Besançon, through its mayor, Antoine-Louis Daclin (Besançon, 1742–1822) – who served as mayor from 1801 to 1816 – to mark the birth of the daughter of Baron Jean De Bry (or Debry) (1760–1834), Prefect of the Doubs from 1801 to 1814. The child, Mademoiselle Féréol Jeanne-Louis-Victoire-Elisa, was born on 9 December 1810. The minutes of the Town Council meeting of 20 December 1810 state: “The Mayor announced to the Council that the Prefect had been kind enough to designate him to give his name to a daughter who had recently been born to him.* The Mayor considered it more appropriate to do so in the name of the town rather than in his own personal capacity, as the Prefect would no doubt be pleased that the inhabitants of this municipality should thereby take a keen interest in everything that contributes to the satisfaction and happiness of the family of this chief magistrate. With the council applauding the idea, the Mayor urgently invited him, on behalf of the city of Besançon, to name the Prefect’s newborn daughter” * The Prefect was on official business in Paris at the time of his daughter’s birth and therefore made this request to the Mayor. This gift, a touching testament to the esteem and friendship between the two men, constitutes a historical memento for the City of Besançon.
