Description
SEGALEN, VICTOR
STÈLES.
[PEI-JING, PEI TA’NG PRESS], 1912. Narrow 8vo (288 x 142 mm). Folded in the Chinese style
The first volume in the Korean Collection, compiled under the direction of Victor Segalen in Peking for Georges Crès et Cie, publishers at 116 Boulevard Saint-Germain, Paris.
One of 81 copies printed on Imperial Japanese paper from Korea (no. 71)
A precious copy bearing this autograph dedication:
To Victor Goloubeu
Such a fervent connoisseur
of the great China that
once was,
This reflection of that distant land
& of times gone by,
With warmest regards
Victor Segalen
The ‘Stèles’ edition, conceived and financed by Segalen, was printed in Beijing using the Lazarist presses. Entirely innovative for a collection of European poetry, the volume adheres to the canons of Chinese bibliophilia: Korean paper, accordion-style folding, a binding consisting of two boards held together by a cord, and a layout featuring black borders.
