Description
Roman School, c. 1700
Madonna and Child with Saint John the Baptist
Oil on canvas.

(Restored).
The classicism that emanates from this painting, through the idealisation of the figures and the monumental architecture suggested in the background, is reminiscent of the work of Nicolas Poussin, the Carracci and Guido Reni. The composition and the drapery reflect an aesthetic based on the pursuit of balance, proportion and nobility.
The artist behind this painting is likely to have been an Italian working in Rome around 1700 or a Frenchman staying in the Eternal City to learn the ‘bella maniera’.
