Nicola Malinconico was an Italian Baroque painter known for producing numerous religious compositions and a few still lifes. Originally from Naples, he trained under Luca Giordano and had the privilege of completing his master’s unfinished commissions after the latter’s departure for Spain.
He was commissioned to work for numerous churches throughout Italy. This sheet is probably a preparatory sketch for the decoration of the Church of Santo Spirito di Palazzo in Naples – which was demolished during the construction of the present-day Piazza del Plebiscito – or for the Church of the Spirito Santo in Sant’Antimo, not far from the city of Naples.
Numerous institutions now hold works by him: the Pinacoteca di Brera in Milan, the Capodimonte Museum, the Palazzo Pretorio Museum, the Gallery of the Academy of Fine Arts in Naples, and the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna.
