Total height including plinth: 48 cm
Bust of a Black woman, an allegory of the African continent in the “Fontaine de l’Observatoire” in Paris. The bonds restraining her body evoke slavery, whilst the twist of the bust, the expression on her face and the movement of her hair convey a sense of rebellion. ‘Why be born a slave?’ echoes the debates sparked by the abolition of slavery in 1848
