Note.
Giovanni Maria Benzoni established himself as one of the leading and most accomplished figures in 19th-century Italian Neoclassical sculpture. Trained in Rome at the Academy of Saint Luke under Giuseppe Fabris, his style followed directly in the footsteps of the genius of Antonio Canova, reconciling the quest for ideal classical beauty with a purely Romantic sensibility.Enjoying immense international renown, Benzoni established a thriving studio in Rome, which became an essential stop for the European and American elite undertaking their Grand Tour. With patrons including Pope Pius IX, the British royal family and the Russian high aristocracy, the artist acquired a legendary reputation for his prodigious technical mastery of marble carving.
