Our painting depicts The Doubting of Saint Thomas. This subject has inspired many painters due to its dramatic tension, characterised by Saint Thomas hesitating to touch Christ’s wounds, whilst those around them watch intently. This theme was particularly popular during the Baroque period, which recognised its strong potential for chiaroscuro, both in the scene itself and in its depiction. Christ is simultaneously marked by the wounds he received on the cross—wounds from which he died—and yet very much alive in the presence of Saint Thomas. Our
composition is reminiscent of the works of the Genoese Baroque from the first half of the 17th century, and more specifically of the work of Gioacchino Assereto.
