Our painting is characteristic of the numerous collaborations between
various Flemish Baroque painters. We attribute the floral composition
of our painting to Andries Danielz; another hand has added a Virgin and
Child. Paintings of the Virgin set within a floral frame are
particularly typical of Flemish Baroque art. These
paintings are almost always the work of several artists, and the most
famous partnership remains that between Jan Brueghel the Elder (1568–1625) and Pierre
Paul Rubens (1577–1640).
Danielz remains a relatively little-known artist. He continued the style of Pieter
Brueghel the Younger (1564–1637/38), of whom he was a pupil, and probably contributed to
the dissemination of his works by producing copies of them.
The maker’s mark of panel maker Michel Claessens bears witness to the work of an
artist working on high-quality supports.
