Description
18th-century ITALIAN school, follower of Michele Giovanni Marieschi (1696–1743) Venice, view of the Piazzetta San Marco Oil on canvas H_36.5 cm W_42.5 cm This painting follows in the tradition of 18th-century Venetian vedute and draws inspiration from the compositions of Luca Carlevarijs (1663–1730), regarded as one of the pioneers of Venetian veduta painting. In 1703, the artist published his famous collection *Le Fabriche e Vedute di Venetia*, bringing together 104 engravings depicting the main monuments and views of the Most Serene Republic. Widely circulated, these prints constituted an important source of inspiration for veduta painters. These views enjoyed immense success throughout the 18th century, particularly amongst travellers on the Grand Tour. Here, the artist draws on the work of masters of the genre such as Canaletto, Francesco Guardi and Francesco Tironi.
