Description
Nicolas de LARGILLIERE (1656–1746), attributed to Portrait of a Woman in a Green Dress and a Pink Silk Ribbon Oil on canvas H 79 cm W 64 cm Re-stretched, restored This portrait depicts an elegant lady wearing a dark green velvet dress, richly embroidered with gold, and styled in the Fontange style. Characteristic of women’s hairstyles at the French court in the late 17th and early 18th centuries, this style was popularised by a royal favourite, the Duchess of Fontanges. With its raised curls and ribbon embellishments, it allows us to date our painting to the late 17th century or the early 18th century. The embroidery motif on the dress and the composition of the painting bring it into close association with the portrait of Voltaire’s mother, which is due to be auctioned on 30 November 2025 at Osenat in Versailles, as well as with the portrait of a woman held in the collection of the Musée Jacquemart-André. The embroidered motif on the dress and the composition of our painting bring it into line with the portrait of Voltaire’s mother, which was sold on 30 November 2025 at Osenat in Versailles, as well as with a portrait of a woman held in the collections of the Jacquemart-André Museum.
