Description
Jeanne Philiberte LEDOUX (1767–1840) Portrait of a Young Girl Oil on panel H_46 cm W_37 cm In a carved and gilded wooden pediment frame Jeanne Philiberte Ledoux was a pupil of Jean-Baptiste Greuze (1725–1805). She adopted his style, particularly in portraiture, a genre she was especially fond of. This painting is characteristic of her work and brilliantly continues her master’s legacy. Whilst the model is clearly inspired by Greuze’s portraits of young girls, the brushwork, for its part, proves more modern, lending an almost pre-Romantic sensibility, whilst retaining a colour palette firmly rooted in her master’s tradition. Recently brought back into the spotlight by the exhibition at the Petit Palais, the theme of childhood possesses a unique charm in Greuze’s work, a charm that Ledoux skilfully extends with delicacy, in the shadow of her master’s brush. Provenance: - Auction of 19 December 1994, De Ricqlès, lot 77
