In the 17th century, Flemish portraiture experienced a remarkable boom, driven by the
prosperity of Antwerp and by demand from a diverse clientele keen
to assert their social status. Jacob Jordaens, Cornelis de Vos and his pupil
Simon de Vos were among the leading portraitists of the bourgeoisie,
whilst Rubens and Van Dyck were more focused on the court and
the aristocracy.
