Description
Jean Baptiste LALLEMAND (1716–1803), detail from ‘Shepherd and his flock amongst ancient ruins’ Ink and wash H_30.5 cm W_26 cm (Stains) This drawing is reminiscent of Jean Baptiste Lallemand’s work in Italy. A French painter, Lallemand lived in Rome between 1747 and 1761. There, under the influence of the great Italian landscape painters, notably Giovanni Paolo Panini and Giovanni Battista Piranesi, he developed a keen interest in the ruins of antiquity. Our drawing is also reminiscent of the compositions of the latter.
