Adam Frans van der Meulen was one of the painters closest to the seat of power
under Louis XIV. Summoned to France around 1664 at the instigation of Colbert and
Charles Le Brun, he became the visual chronicler of the king’s military campaigns,
accompanying him into the field to depict sieges, battles and
triumphal entries.
His paintings and tapestry cartoons, produced at the Gobelins, contributed
directly to royal propaganda by presenting a glorious image of the
reign. He ran a busy studio, where assistants helped him to execute the
landscapes, troops and details for his vast compositions. Among his principal
collaborators were his brother, Pieter van der Meulen, Jean-Baptiste Martin,
known as ‘Martin des Batailles’, and Sauveur Le Conte, who succeeded him at the
Gobelins Manufactory and was tasked, upon his death, with completing all his
unfinished compositions. Joseph Parrocel, and after him his son Charles,
also played a part in promoting his style.
