Description
Jean-Baptiste PIGALLE (1714–1785), after
The Child with the Cage
White marble figure on a chiselled and gilded bronze plinth with rich foliage decoration.
Late 18th century.
Height: 50 cm
Provenance:
- the princely collection of the House of Tour and Taxis
- subsequently a private collection in Frankfurt am Main
Note.
This sculpture depicts the son of Jean Pâris de Montmartel, a wealthy financier and art collector who was also the godfather of the Marquise de Pompadour. Pigalle was so fond of this work that he later decided to purchase it in order to pair it with a second creation: *The Girl with the Bird and the Apple*. Unlike the boy, this girl is not the portrait of a real child. Together, these two statues form a pair celebrating the innocence of childhood.
The original marble sculpture of *L’Enfant à la cage* is housed in the Louvre Museum in Paris (inventory no. RF 654).
