Description
PIERRE GOUTHIERE (1732–1831), attributed to, Ovoid vase in Revna jasper and chiselled, gilded bronze, decorated with foliage, friezes of small flowers, beaded laurel garlands, friezes of ovals and foliate scrolls. The handles are shaped like tritons. The pedestal rests on a quadrangular base. Louis XVI period Height: 41 cm Note. Several similar vases attributed to Pierre Gouthière have appeared at public auction, the only difference being that the children are looking outwards, whereas on our example, their hands are touching the lid. We find the same bronze decoration on a brown marble vase featured in the Galliéra sale of 4 December 1963. On a number of ewers, we also find the arrangement of the bronze figures touching the neck of the vase with their hands, as well as similarities in the bronze work, particularly in the detailing of the child Triton and the bronze garlands of oak leaves extending from the lower part of his body. A pair of comparable ewers is held at the Pittsburgh Museum. Pierre Gouthière is probably one of the most talented chasers of the second half of the 18th century. He obtained his licence as an ordinary gilder for the Menus Plaisirs in 1767, which enabled him both to gain a certain reputation and thus to build up the finest clientele of the time; to name but one of his clients: the Duke of Aumont
