Jean-Baptiste Pillement was an 18th-century French artist, particularly renowned for his landscapes, seascapes and decorative compositions. A keen traveller, he worked notably in Spain, Portugal, England and Poland, where he enjoyed the patronage of King Stanisław August
Poniatowski.
His work is characterised by large-scale pastoral scenes and picturesque landscapes.
Pillement also played an important role in popularising the Rococo style, notably through his drawings of chinoiserie and ornamental motifs, which were widely reproduced in engravings and used in the decorative arts. He enjoyed particularly significant international success in the 18th century, as evidenced by the sale at Christie’s in London in 1774 of 70 of his paintings, as well as by prestigious patrons such as Queen Marie Antoinette and the Prince of Asturias.
Our drawings are perfectly in keeping with his style, particularly in the depiction of animals. The grid lines visible on our drawings suggest that they served as models for painted compositions.
