Description
Pierre MIGNARD (1612–1695), attributed to Portrait of a man with an undone cravat knot, c. 1680 Oil on canvas in a faux oval frame. H_48.5 cm W_38.5 cm Re-stretched, restored. Our painting is a fine example of the evolution of portraiture under Louis XIV. Indeed, the pose becomes less formal and artists take greater liberty. Here, the man is depicted with his cravat knot undone. More than just original, this distinctive feature of the portrayal conveys a certain closeness to the painter. Pierre Mignard may have inherited his flair for portraiture from his master, Simon Vouet, with whom he spent the second part of his apprenticeship. A painter of great talent, his travels to Italy – from which he returned at the request of Louis XIV in 1657, finally convinced him of the merits of chiaroscuro. His portraits reveal great psychological insight and a particular attention to detail. He was one of Charles Lebrun’s direct rivals at the court of Louis XIV.
