Note. In Russia, glassmaking enjoyed a period of great splendour between the second half of the 18th century and the 19th century, notably under the impetus of the Imperial Manufactory in St Petersburg. This pair of vases bears witness to the technical mastery and imagination of the period’s designers: the use of tinted glass, in an amethyst shade and complemented by a gilded bronze decoration of neoclassical inspiration, is typical of Russian production. Most of the pieces produced by the manufactory were intended for the imperial residences, but some were also used as diplomatic gifts.
