Jean-Baptiste Greuze is one of the most famous painters of the French Enlightenment. He helped to revitalise genre painting by depicting anecdotal moments of everyday life and conveying a sentimental image of family life. His works, widely disseminated through engravings, were copied and reinterpreted by numerous artists.
On the back of the frame of our painting is a note referring to Christina Augusta von Fersen, Countess Löwenhielm, who came from a prominent family of the Swedish nobility. She was the cousin of Axel von Fersen, Marie Antoinette’s favourite.
