Description
Claude GALLE (1759–1815), attributed to PAIR OF VESTAL CANDELABRES In gilded bronze, with a patina, featuring three light holders in the shape of oil lamps, each centred with an incense burner. On a stepped base of veined marble surmounting a foliage frieze. Early 19th century. Height: 53 cm Note. The oil lamp first appeared in the early 1780s in a preparatory drawing attributed to Thomire (collection of the Musée des Arts Décoratifs, Paris), which accompanied this revival of interest in antiquity.
