Description
Georges CHARPENTIER (19th–20th centuries).
The Port of Dieppe.
Oil on canvas, signed at the bottom right (yellowed varnish, very slight craquelure).
Height: 58 cm – Width: 86 cm
Note: Georges Charpentier devoted a significant part of his work to the landscapes of Normandy, in particular the Port of Dieppe and its maritime activity. He depicted sailing ships, fishing boats and trawlers. His painting is characterised by a free brushstroke and a focus on the effects of light, in line with the pictorial innovations that revitalised French landscape painting in the late 19th century.
