This marble medallion depicts a bust of Philip V, King of Spain. He wears a richly decorated military cuirass and sports the Order of the Golden Fleece around his neck. Depicted in profile, with a youthful face and his gaze fixed in the distance, towards the future, this portrait conveys the solemn image of a young sovereign, courageous and serene. In 1700, Philip, Duke of Anjou and second grandson of Louis XIV, succeeded Charles II to the Spanish throne. Whilst residing at Versailles, the new monarch was recognised and celebrated at the court of the Sun King. This medallion portrait, dating from the early days of the reign of Spain’s first Bourbon monarch, lies at the crossroads of political propaganda and artistic expression. In its composition, the dignity of the pose and the delicate rendering of the cuirass, the scarf and the curls of hair, one can see the influence of the Baroque portraits of Louis XIV painted notably by François Girardon, Pierre Puget and Antoine Coysevox.
Having arrived in Spain in 1701, Philip V remained deeply attached to the legacy of the court of Versailles. Between 1721 and 1738, he commissioned the sculptor René Frémin, who created numerous sculptures for the gardens of La Granja as well as several busts of the royal family.
