Description
A half-moon table in satinwood veneer and marquetry; the band is decorated with four-leaf motifs within an interlaced pattern (the veneer is raised in places, with gaps and sun-faded areas).
It stands on four sheathed legs (damaged, repaired).
The folding top is lined with green felt (showing signs of damp and areas where the felt is missing).
Height: 79 cm – Width: 101 cm – Depth: 51 cm
Diameter of the unfolded top: 101 cm
Stamped on the underside: ‘Meubles anciens Hopilliart & Leroy, Paris, 12 rue des Saints-Pères’.
Louis XVI style, 19th century.
Also included:
- a half-moon table in mahogany and mahogany veneer (re-varnished), with brass mouldings and ornamentation.
It stands on five tapered, fluted legs (minor losses and holes caused by wood-boring insects, knocks, chips and warping).
Folding circular top lined with green felt (stains).
Directoire period.
Height: 70 cm – Diameter: 107 cm
Note: it is interesting to note that a bill dated 27 April 1910 was found in Marcel Proust’s former ‘Cartonnier’, now held at the Bibliothèque nationale de France. It bears the letterhead ‘Hopilliart & Leroy, 12 rue des Saints-Pères’, addressed to ‘Marcel Proust, 102 bd Haussmann’, listing a range of items, including English engravings in particular.
