Description
[NATURAL HISTORY] Willem PISO / Georg MARKGRAF / Thedor MATHAM - Historia naturalis Brasiliae
Leiden ; Franciscum Hackium, Amsterdam ; Elzevirum, 1648 - Extremely rare first edition of the first work on the natural history of Brazil and tropical medicine, in two separate parts bound into one volume.
The first part is the result of Willem Piso's participation in a scientific expedition organised by Johan Maurits van Nassau-Siegen, Governor of the Dutch colonies in Brazil, in 1638.
The second part brings together the work of Georg Markgraf on Brazilian astronomy, fauna and flora.
This work is considered to be the first major description of Brazil and was a reference throughout the 18th century for scientific communities interested in this part of the world.
Copy in its contemporary full calf binding, spine with 5 nerves but one leather missing from a whole box, two other boxes damaged, minor defects to the boards and especially missing the engraved title-frontispiece page. Otherwise complete, index and blank end-page also present.
More than 500 in-text engravings accompany the text, of which botanical and natural history subjects constitute the major part.
