Jean-Baptiste-Henri LACORDAIRE, known in religious life as Father Henri-Dominique Lacordaire (Recey-sur-Ource (Côte-d’Or), 1802–1861), a religious figure, preacher, journalist and politician; restorer of the Order of Preachers (Dominicans) in France, now regarded as one of the forerunners of liberal Catholicism.
A long and interesting autograph letter signed in Sorèze on 11 March 1860, in which he explains that it is he personally who is subscribing to the loan of 70,000 francs and sets out the means of security, namely by ‘mortgage’ on the convent of Saint-Maximin, which he had purchased in 1859, or by “way of a surety (...) a private deed of surety from two lady heirs...who own between two and three million in land holdings in the vicinity of Toulouse”.
He thanks his correspondent for his donation, which he is sending directly to the work of Saint Madeleine, and adds: “I shall establish a Saint Madeleine fund in all my convents”
