Description
Léo LARGUIER (La Grand-Combe, in the Cévennes, 1878–1950), poet, short-story writer, literary critic and essayist.
A set of six autograph, signed letters to Rémy de Gourmont, in which he discusses, amongst other things, his pastoral poem ‘Simone’: ‘I have read your “Simone” and thank you for it. I do not wish to comment on your metre, so as not to spoil the pleasure I take in congratulating you on this lyrical piece”.
He mentions his military service, which he undertook in Aix-en-Provence: “I know nothing of life, being away on major manoeuvres. Perhaps I received your booklet at La Grand Combe. As for the poem I gave you—the one you criticise for its ‘qui’s and ‘que’s’—please do not publish it; I’m not in the right frame of mind for poetry at the moment and won’t be revising it. Tear it up."
He touches on the subject of articles in magazines: “Here are some verses; I’m making an exception for you, as I never publish in magazines. An article by you would be, since you are offering it to me, most welcome; one is understood and properly read only by young men, and I couldn’t care less about Deschamps’s nonsense in last month’s *Le Temps* (...) Need I tell you that I am used to seeing my verses in the top spot?”
