‘What I wish to achieve is both to divide space and to recreate it, to render it paradoxically fragmented and shifting, through a linear process that tears apart the form without denying it ” – Huguette Arthur-Bertrand to Muchel Seuphor in his *Dictionnaire de la peinture abstraite*, published in 1957.
A rare female painter of post-war lyrical abstraction, Huguette Arthur-Bertrand was an active participant in the Parisian art scene, rubbing shoulders with Pierre Soulages and Hans Hartung, Zao Wou-Ki and Chu Teh-Chun... In 1949, she took part in the exhibition *Les Mains éblouies* at the Maeght Gallery; in the 1950s, she exhibited in New York, Brussels and Copenhagen... Michel Ragon selected her for *L’Aventure de l’art abstrait* in 1956 (alongside the artists mentioned above, as well as Poliakoff, Atlan, Bissière, Schneider and others). Her works are now held in major French museums. Yet she is not featured in the 2021 exhibition “Elles font l’abstraction” at the MNAM Centre Pompidou… It is high time to restore the visibility she deserves to this recognised figure of French abstraction from the second half of the 20th century, so that Huguette Arthur-Bertrand may be, as she always was during her lifetime, the equal of her contemporaries.
