Description
Philippe Hosiasson (1898–1978) Untitled 1956 Watercolour on paper, signed, dated and inscribed ‘Michel Tapié de Céleyran’ in the lower right-hand corner 64 x 44.5 cm Condition report: Framed Philippe Hosiasson belongs to the generation of artists who settled in France during the interwar period, grouped under the name ‘École de Paris’. The 1956 composition presented here is characteristic of his work from the 1950s, considered one of the most accomplished periods of his career. From 1947–1948, Philippe Hosiasson produced his first Informel paintings, which the critics Michel Tapié and Michel Seuphor likened to Abstract Expressionism. The affinities with the American art scene are evident in these networks of drips and masses of colour, evoking in particular the work of Clifford Still, Helen Frankenthaler and Robert Motherwell. Supported by the critic Clement Greenberg, Hosiasson exhibited at the Kootz Gallery in New York alongside Barnett Newman, Mark Rothko and Kenneth Noland. For the artist, abstraction is not merely the strict application of the biblical narrative, according to which the depiction of the human figure is forbidden, but rather it constitutes ‘his means of expressing his conception of the world and his Judaism’.
