Description
Robert Lapoujade (1921–1993) Délire III – Dualité 1959 Oil on canvas, signed and dated lower right, titled on the reverse 70 x 150 cm Provenance: > Private collection, Brittany Condition report: Framed ‘His repertoire of forms is directly inspired by nature, and in particular by the old, stain-covered walls described by Vinci, whom he quotes in the epigraph to his essay *Les Mécanismes de fascination*. Lapoujade is far from rejecting the subject. But he seeks a form of ‘allusive ambiguity’; first, appreciate the painted panel itself, its rhythm and its colour; then, read the title of the painting and you will discover a presence. ’ – Bernard Dorival, historian and art critic, curator at the Centre Pompidou from 1941 to 1968. Lapoujade is not content merely to be aesthetically innovative; his painting is political: Hiroshima, the Algerian War, the riots and May ’68 are central themes in his work. In his preface to Lapoujade’s exhibition at the Galerie Pierre Domec in 1961, Jean-Paul Sartre wrote: “It is, I believe, a rather significant event that a painter has managed to appeal so strongly to us by showing us, without embellishment, the striking mourning of our consciences.” Blurring the boundary between abstraction and figuration whilst bearing witness to social phenomena. Presenting without imposing, inviting the viewer to wait for the subject to reveal itself, and prompting the viewer to reflect. Robert Lapoujade’s work – in particular his depictions of crowds, such as the one shown here – brings to mind that of a great contemporary French artist: Philippe Cognée.
