Description
Georges Van Haardt (1907–1980) Abstract Composition 1962 Oil on canvas, signed and dated on the reverse 22 x 16 cm Condition report: Framed
An artist of Polish origin, born in 1907, Georges Van Haardt – whose real name was Jerzy Brodnicki – initially studied law before pursuing a career as a magistrate. At the same time, he devoted himself to painting under the pseudonym Georges Van Haardt, borrowed from the name of his first wife, Egga van Haardt. It was not until 1946, during an interview with *The American Weekly*, that he fully embraced his identity as an artist.
His travels took him successively to Italy, Greece, Turkey, Palestine and Lebanon, before he settled in Paris around 1950 with his second wife, Czesława Pogorzelska.
His work developed along two main lines: the ‘black works’ and the ‘colourful works’.
The 1962 painting we are presenting here belongs to this second period, during which the artist gradually moved away from form in favour of colour and line. The flat areas of colour, freed from any descriptive function, become the true building blocks of the composition.
In 1953, *La couleur est une figure* was published, the first essay devoted to his artistic philosophy. In it, Van Haardt sets out the foundations of his approach: in his view, colour liberates form, breaks free from it and acquires its own autonomy. It becomes a language in its own right, capable of conveying the work’s meaning on its own.
