Henri Goetz (1909–1988) Composition 1968 Oil on paper, signed lower left, mounted on a panel signed and dated on the reverse 35.5 x 44.5 cm Provenance: > Private collection, Charente-Maritime Condition report: Framed A Franco-American painter and printmaker, Goetz initially explored figurative art and surrealism before turning, from 1948 onwards, towards a resolutely abstract body of work, in which line and stroke play an essential role. Drawing on his artistic friendships – ranging from Picasso to Picabia, via Arp, Hartung and Kandinsky – he developed a multifaceted practice, exploring both painting and printmaking. As exemplified by the 1968 composition we are presenting here, his work is characterised by a network of graphic lines set against coloured backgrounds, creating a subtle balance between gestural spontaneity and formal composition.
