Description
Marcelle Loubchansky (1917–1988) Cloud-inspired composition Ink on handkerchief, signed lower right 22.5 x 21 cm Condition report: Framed
A self-taught artist, generally associated with the Tachist and Nuagist movements, Marcelle Loubchansky advocated ‘the free outpouring of creative forces’. She developed a unique technique, consisting of mixing petrol with paint, which she would then pour directly onto the canvas. This enables her to visually manipulate light and shadow, thereby evoking a sense of infinity. Her compositions unfold as deep, colourful and translucent cosmoses, which seem to be animated by a shifting breath.
As a heir to Surrealism, she was noticed by André Breton, who wrote of her: ‘No one has known how to liberate and give full expression to these forms emerging from the heart of the earth, imbued with both moisture and flame, which bear witness to a new gestation... and it is a breath of fresh air, rising from her works, which restores to us, through them, the pure gaze of childhood, where the enchantment of the Northern Lights blends with that of a dress the colour of time.” A.B., 1956
