Description
Iaroslav Sossountzov Serpan (1922–1976) Untitled Ink on paper, monogrammed ‘IS’ in the lower left-hand corner 50 x 65 cm Provenance: > Former collection of Michel Tapié (1909–1987)
> Former collection of Arthur Unger (1932–1924)
Condition report: Loss and tear
Born in Prague, Serpan arrived in France in 1926. Initially a member of the Surrealist group (his work was exhibited as part of the ‘Le Surréalisme’ exhibition in 1947 at the Maeght Gallery), he subsequently turned towards Informel art, guided by Wols and Michel Tapié. His extremely energetic, almost aggressive brushwork stands out against a white background that evokes a sense of calm. The texture and splashes of colour punctuate this composition, whose vigour draws us in. In 1976, the promising young artist Serpan went missing whilst on a hike in the Pyrenees.
