Mori Sosen (Japan, 1747–1821) Ink and colours on silk, two macaques amongst the pine trees in front of a waterfall, one eating a fruit. Signed Sosen and stamped ‘zo’ and ‘Sosen’. Dimensions: 139 x 78.5 cm Framed under glass (glass removed) Mori Sosen (1747–1821) is the Japanese painter best known for his depictions of monkeys, which earned him the nickname ‘Sosen of the Monkeys’. He first studied under Sessô Toyo and then trained at the Kanō school, before developing a personal style akin to Maruyama-Shijō naturalism. He subsequently settled in Osaka, where he spent most of his career; according to legend, he spent several years observing wild macaques in order to study their behaviour and mannerisms. This direct observation is reflected in his art through a meticulous rendering of the fur and a remarkable accuracy in the animals’ expressions, lending his monkeys an almost human presence, imbued with gentleness. A prolific painter who was in great demand during his lifetime, Sosen elevated animal painting to the status of a genre in its own right, leaving behind a vast body of work that remains highly sought after by collectors to this day.
