History:
Louis Floutier (1882–1936) was a leading figure in 20th-century Basque painting; he devoted much of his work to depicting the landscapes and traditions of the Basque Country. Having settled in Saint-Jean-de-Luz after the First World War, he developed a luminous and sensitive style, combining rigorous drawing with fresh colours. His compositions accurately capture the unique atmosphere of Basque villages, ports and hills, of which he became one of the most faithful interpreters. Despite its intimate scale, the work presented here retains all the qualities for which the artist is renowned: a harmonious colour palette, delicate light and a vision deeply rooted in the soul of the Basque Country.
