Nicolas-François CANARD (1754–1833), mathematician and economist. 2 letters, Moulins, 15 Pluviôse and 23 Germinal x (4 February and 13 April 1802), to Citizen Morand, professor at the École Centrale in Paris; 3 pages in-4, one address. Concerning his reinstatement as a professor at the École Centrale in Moulins. – 4 February: ‘At last, Citizen and friend, a favourable opportunity has arisen for me to resume my post; the professor of general grammar has just died, so they may either appoint me to that post, or restore mine to me through an exchange, but I still fear a refusal from the investigating jurors, who are my sworn enemies”; he asks Morand to intervene with the Minister so that he may acknowledge the injustice done to him. – 13 April: he learns that he has been awarded the prize for the second time at the Institute and that he has been appointed ‘to the chair of general grammar following the change in the selection panel. ‘Citizen Roederer has asked the prefect to appoint me without a competitive examination, and he has written to me personally to inform me of this’; he asks Morand to arrange for his award-winning treatise [Treatise on the Improvement of the Jury, 1802], to offer it to the highest-bidding bookseller for a print run of 2,500 or 3,000 copies, and he points out that he sold his *Principles of Political Economy* at 42ll per sheet”; he also asks him to intervene with his printer, Buisson: ‘I very much fear that he may have snatched the second edition of my first work from me’, and to make him understand ‘that it is in his own interest to act fairly towards me, because I have several other works to sell’…Finally, he asks him to proofread his proofs and to convey his regards to Citizen Lakanal, from whom he is awaiting a letter.
