Sébastien Roch Nicolas CHAMFORT (1740–1794), writer and moralist. Autograph manuscript with a letter of dispatch by Jean-Baptiste SAY; 1 page in-16 and 1 page in-4. Anecdote about Chamfort: ‘There is a letter from Anne of Austria to Cardinal Mazarin, in which she assumes the name of one of her ladies-in-waiting and writes to him a thousand things that are almost tender. She adds: ‘I would tell you much more, were it not for the fact that the Queen, who is standing behind me, causes me some unease by reading everything I write.’ Jean-Baptiste Say notes: ‘Here is an anecdote I have taken from Chamfort’s papers, which I did not have printed because it is scarcely worth the trouble.’ He attests to the authenticity of the autograph he has transcribed.
